To the Respected Members of the Admissions Committee:
I have chosen the New York University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to pursue a master’s degree in Modern Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies because I understand it to be the best school and the best program, not only in New York, but in the world. I believe that a combination of NYU’s distinguished faculty, available resources, and the unique reputation of this exceptional school, along with my strong character, diligence and desire to attend and graduate from NYU, is mutually beneficial. In addition, I believe my intelligence, integrity, maturity, self-confidence, problem-solving ability, organizational and leadership skills and potential for career advancement are my strongest traits and I ready to bring them to NYU as a chosen candidate for admission.
The fine arts have been an integral part of my life since I was a child, largely from my father’s influence. When I was growing up, he made sure that I was exposed to the fine arts. Objects of art have surrounded me since I can remember such as watching a talented artist work on a painting – the process captivated me. My father has been close friends with the artist as well as his sponsor and agent for many years. My father’s hobby of representing and collecting John Doe artworks has been a strong foundation for my own love for fine arts. My father also gave me many opportunities to nurture this love. For example, I was able to travel around the world and visit grand museums such as Tate Modern in London, Musée du Louvre in Paris, Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and of course, the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, to name a few. Visiting museums, galleries and art fairs became one of my major interests. Admiring artworks was not the only thing I did during these visits. I also admired the process itself, what was involved in the organization of such events, and what skills are required. In addition, my father gave an opportunity to receive education in the United States where my love and appreciation for art became a career choice.
I am a graduate of Boston University and I earned my Bachelors of Business Administration with a dual concentration in Entrepreneurship and Marketing in 2011. Additionally, my business background has proven to have a positive impact on my continuing educational choices.
Currently, I am attending three different educational venues. As of September 2012, I am enrolled in the MBA program at St. John’s University. My current GPA of 3.6 is evidence of my dedication to learning and I feel it proves how serious I am about my future. I have also started an Art History class at Parsons the New School for Design.
During the summer of 2012, I completed an Art of New York History class with Dr. Jane Doe, who suggested that I attend a few art business classes within the Art Market Department where she is an Associate Chairperson. The fact that she was willing to make an exception for me made me research the field of Art Business further and I became very interested. I found a few certificate programs offered in the field and decided to attend Sotheby’s Art Business course. I began the program in September 2012. This program consists of five modules: Art and Law, the Art Market, Art and Valuation, the Auction House, and the Art World Today.
As it relates to my employment, I work as a U.S. representative of artist, John Doe, and have been working on a few projects associated with opening an online store for him, selling his original artworks as well as fine art reproductions (giclees). John has been voted one of the top fifty emerging artists by the Art Magazine, which has significantly raised the value of his artworks in Russia. Under my representation, Doe’s oil paintings have been sold into prominent art collections of significant political figures in Russia, as well as into collection of many Russian bankers. You can see more of what I do with this artist in my Curriculum Vitae.
Furthermore, I have started an internship at Artnet AG. I work in the gallery department, where I perform art market and gallery research for the Latin American region. I am also being considered to work on the Russian region, a somewhat untapped area of the art market for the company.
My ultimate career objective includes working for a prominent museum in New York City. I would love to be a curator. I am a great organizer and I have a strong potential to become a great manager. In the near future, I would enjoy working for art galleries as well. Having an internship at Artnet is a great opportunity for me, and I am interested in possibly exploring the prospect of career advancement with this company.
In conclusion, my hope is that it is apparent why I would love to transfer from St John’s University to New York University. While St. John’s is a great school with an exceptional faculty, I started attending St. John’s, along with other educational venues, to improve my GPA and to prepare myself for the workload at NYU. My objective has always been to attend NYU GSAS. In the interim, my goal was to create a strong application package and to present the materials that show how truly ready and eager I am to attend the curatorial program at NYC, and I hope I have reached that goal.
Thank you for taking the time to review my letter of academic purpose. Please contact me if you have questions. I will be more than happy to answer, and I look forward to hearing from you otherwise.
