The London Marathon takes place just six days after the Boston Marathon incident. Among the crowd at the marathon was Prince Harry who mingled with the crowd of people attending the London marathon despite the fears of bomb explosions similar to those witnessed during the Boston marathon. The prince said that he had not thought of cancelling the visits following the Boston bombings. The outcome of the marathon shifts the focus back from terrorist fears to sport. The participants in the marathon including Tsegaye Kabede the winner of both the 2010 London marathon and the current marathon condemns the Boston incident. Prince Harry also commented on the huge crowds along the route and stressed that it was remarkable to see such crowds. The crowds along the route held banners paying tribute to Boston. The organizers increased the event security by 40%, but this did not affect the race. Several competitors had participated in the Boston Marathon, and among them was Tatyana McFadden. The American won the Boston Marathon and marked her 24th birthday with a second title during the London marathon. She said she was determined to run at the London marathon as a tribute to the victims of the Boston incident. Jeptoo the winner of the women’s marathon said the turnout of spectators was incredible and they were not scared.

Bombing suspects

The federal authorities ask to speak with the wife of the suspected  Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Amato DeLuca the lawyer the suspects wife says he spoke with federal authorities on the way to approach the issue. The two suspected brothers Tsarnaev, 26, and, Dzhokhar, 19 are ethnic Chechen brothers from southern Russia. They are accused of planting explosives near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 180. The wife expressed her disappointment saying that she got the information from the media that her husband was a suspect, and it had never crossed her that her husband was a terrorist.The lawyer also provided new details on the suspect’s whereabouts prior to his death. He says that the suspect was at home on the day he was killed while his wife was at work.

The other suspect in the bombings, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, remains hospitalized two days after he was found hiding, and wounded behind a house in Watertown. The Boston police commissioner Ed Davis says that they believed the brothers were planning other attacks. Deval Patrick, the Massachusetts Governor, said that they have surveillance video showing one of the suspect drop a backpack and walk away minutes before the bomb in the backpack exploded.

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Lushan County leaving 184 people dead, 22 missing and displacing 11,800 others. Kevin Xia who is a member of the International Federation of Red Cross, and Red Crescent Societies, says that the earthquake struck the county of Lushan is getting back to normal, but it still needs considerable shelter and materials. Kevin also says the suppliers are stuck in traffic jams and cannot access the region. Relief workers also note difficulty in accessing Lushan county and other areas up in the mountains. Lushan county is close to an area struck by a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in May 2008 leaving 80,000 people dead.  Armed police had to abandon their vehicles and travel by foot to Boaxing, one of the hardest hit areas. The Xinhua news agency estimates the number of troops assisting in the rescue mission to be close to 18,000. The country’s foreign ministry thanked foreign governments but stated that the country is able to cope. Doctors tended to the tragedy victims in the open or under tents around the main hospital. The victims of the tragedy express concern on the magnitude of the quake. Li Keqiang, the Premier of the country visited the county and comforted the victims of the quake assuring them that the government covered all their medical costs. The earthquake leaves most of the victims poor, and their only hope is the government.

A little girl was kidnapped, raped, and abandoned to die in a locked room. The girl was subsequently rescued by neighbors who heard her crying from the locked room and is recuperating. The Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh raised his concerns regarding the changes on the people’s attitudes towards women in India. The prime minister said the horrific assault on the small girl should remind the people of the need to embrace collective responsibility in order to root out immorality in the society.  The incident raised protests after the police declined to take complaints from the parents of the girl. The protestors also urged the government to guarantee protection of women and girls in the city. Following this incident, two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The attack on the little girl comes only  four months after a similar incident on a woman in the city. This prior incident also sparked outrage on the treatment of women in the country. Although the incident lead to the  enactment of laws for crimes against women, the Human rights, watch says that the government should not only pass laws but also work on implementing them.

Lakers loss

Los Angeles Lakers loses their first game to San Antonio.  Dwight Howard, howe, says that the loss does not discourage the team and they anticipate good results in the second game. He says that they had learnt something from the game against San Antonio and was confident of impressive performance in the second game. Although the opponents had difficulty at the beginning of the game, they came around to win the match. Kobe Bryant who is out of the game due to an injury tweeted comments about the game. His comments however outraged some of his teammates, and they questioned the appropriateness of the comments. The Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni says that Bryant is a fan and the media is placing a lot more importance on him and as a fan, he wants to be part of the excitement. Bryant tweeted ridiculing the coach’s  comments of him being a fan.

Crocodile attacks

Yoann Galeran, a 29-year-old French fisherman who was bloodied by a young saltwater crocodile is back to his fishing boat after escaping the ordeal. The fisherman says that everything happened so fast and lasted for less than five seconds. The fisherman recounts how lucky he is and adds that if the crocodile had been bigger he would have died. Galeran received wounds on his head and neck following the attack and received several stitches for the wounds. Charlie Manolis a zoologist says that the crocodile possibly weighed less than 40 kilograms, and is small to cause a serious threat to an adult. He notes that the crocodile probably misjudged the victim’s size in the moonless night. Manolis further says that although crocodiles are plentiful around the area locals regard them as a totem and that the  deadly box jellyfish in the coastal waters during the summer months posed a greater threat to human life.
