Policies, laws, regulations, and statutes are enacted and implemented to enhance public service delivery by governments to their people. They usually seek to promote certain values in society and ensure harmony and stability of countries. Most of the policies and laws implemented or enforced by governments are beneficial to the public since they uphold public service values. However, it is also important to note that some of these policies and laws have adverse effects in terms of various public service values. The coverage demystifies one such policy, which is the Prevention through Deterrence policy that came into being in the mid-nineties. The policy is intended to reduce the number of illegal immigrants entering the US through its borders, especially at the Mexico-US border. The same dogma is linked to public service values of lawfulness and social justice in the sense that it promotes lawfulness and, at the same time, indirectly undermines social justice.
