Critical review

Introduction

This critique will look at the journal article “The impact of technological and organizational innovations on employment in European firms” written by Rinaldo Evangelista and Antonio Vezzani.  The article deals with the issue of technological and organizational innovation on employment in European firms.  The article uses firm-level data from a number of EU countries to understand how both technology and organizational innovations influence employment.  The article found that they have a positive impact on employment, although through “indirect” means.  The strength of the “indirect” effect varied across different firms.  Overall, I found the article to be a compelling examination of the potential association between the two concepts.

Critique

Typically, public health campaigns focus on the preparation and dissemination of information to specific sub-populations about disease prevention.  However, often times even the best conceived efforts with seminal information are not adopted by targeted individuals.  This research article looks at innovative efforts by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario to market “Small Steps”, a program that aimed to increase physical activity for those at risk for cardiovascular disease. Rather than using traditional dissemination efforts, however, the Foundation used market segmentation and program evaluation along with traditional health promotion distribution channels. The study found that adopting marketing techniques helped the Foundation to understand which demographic segments responded to the ad and what types of media worked the best to attract telephone responses.

Beyond Contradiction: Exploring the work of secondary science teachers as they embed environmental education in curricula

Definition

It was made clear in the definition of the study that this study investigates the work of secondary science teachers as they embed environmental education in curricula in Northern Ontario, Canada. However, the title of the study is not completely clear. It does not clearly give the purpose of authoring and using e-learning designs for teachers. Furthermore, it does not mention the use of these designs, though in achieving the objectives of this study the use of the designs in teaching is given an equal importance as authoring.

Journal Articles

1.

Nicki Kelly’s Between the Lines editorial entitled “Mishandling of Referendum had Made Us a Laughing Stock” deals with the issue of online gambling in the Bahamas. The article examines the irony of the Bahamas Prime Minister, Perry Christie, and government attempting to pass regulations that would allow for the continued existence of online gambling web-sites. The irony, according to Kelly, is due to the fact that the regulations that were drafted and attempting to be passed were not based on solid research regarding the economic and social consequences of continued legalization of online gambling. Instead, the regulations were thrown together in short-order to allow for the continuation of online gambling with the reservation that the same regulations might be modified after they were passed. Additionally, Kelly points out that the Bahamas government employed a South African consulting team to advise them on the issue of online gambling while also commenting that gambling is an illegal act in South Africa.

Critique

In the three articles in question, Uscinski’s “The Timing of Presidential Cinema” and “Too Close to Call? Uncertainty and Bias in Election-Night Reporting”, and Uscinski and Goren’s “What’s in a Name? Coverage of Senator Hillary Clinton during the 2008 Democratic Primary”, the primary theme is the nexus between politics and media coverage, although as analyzed through more quantitative methods, such as duration analysis and regression analysis. Hence, when focusing on these texts from the perspective of a content analysis, what is crucial is whether such an approach satisfies the criteria of providing an accurate account of the issues in question in each article.

Critiquing Essay of President Nixons Resignation Speech

Essay: President Nixon’s Resignation Speech

Introduction

On August 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon publicly and officially resigned his office in a televised address from the Oval Office of the White House.  This act occurred as Nixon’s second term was in force; he had been reelected to the presidency in 1972 by a wide margin, boosted by immense public support for his international policies, as well as by conflict within the opposing Democratic party (Kilpatrick).  The resignation was prompted by the accumulation of two years of damaging investigations as to Nixon’s involvement in the 1972 Watergate scandal, in which men acting on orders from the Republican Committee to Reelect the President had broken into Democratic National Headquarters.  In Senate hearings largely televised to the public, the ongoing investigation increasingly indicated full awareness on Nixon’s part as to the crime, if not outright complicity.  This reportage, while intended to serve legislative and judicial interests, essentially created the foundation for the unprecedented resignation, ending a presidency otherwise predominantly viewed as vastly successful.
